There are many free screen recording software you can use with Windows 10, for the short how-to videos I make I'm using free cam 8.

A nice free alternative is to use the screen recording software built into Microsoft PowerPoint.

The screen recording within PowerPoint doesn't give you much in terms of options but is perfectly good to use for basic screen recording tasks.

How to record your screen for free with PowerPoint

• Launch PowerPoint and start a blank presentation
• Select the Insert tab from the top menu
• Select Screen recording on the far right-hand side
• PowerPoint will close and you'll see the 6 recording options
• Record, stop, select area, audio, pointer, pin
• Select the area of your screen you would like to record
• If you are recording your full screen and have hidden the menu you will need to press windows logo + shift + Q to stop the recording
• Once you stop the recording the video will open in PowerPoint
• If you are not wanting to use the video in PowerPoint
• Right-click the video and select "save media as"
• This will allow you to save your recording as an MP4
• In the case of the demo below, I saved the video as test.mp4 into my videos folder.
