Error:
An error occurred while reconnection to (Drive Letter): to (Server Address)
Microsoft Windows Network: The local device name is already in use.
This connection has not been restored.
Situation:
With more people working from home and still some old legacy VPN systems in play we have been seeing this error more than ever recently. We have a couple of legacy systems set up so the user VPN's to the router but accesses the network drive on the server. We also have a few users that are working from home on personal laptops not joined onto their company domain. These are the two scenarios where we have seen this error the most.
Solution:
In the case of users VPN'ing to the router and not directly to the server, it can be possible that the user has a password mismatch. For example, the user has reset their domain (pc login) password but of course, they don't have access to reset their VPN password on the company router. In this case, resetting both passwords to the same can fix this. However, a good workaround in all situations is to set the network drive password in the control panel. So for the sake of this fix, we will pretend that our server name is "Apollo" on IP "10.10.1.2", domain name is "gorazy" and my username is mark.smith.
- Using the search bar type the word control and open the control panel
- Click on users accounts
- On the left menu click on manage your credentials
- Click on Windows credentials
- Click add a Windows credential
- Type in server name or IP (apollo or 10.10.1.2)
- Your full domain username (gorazy\mark.smith)
- Your current company password
- Disconnect and reconnect your company VPN and attempt to connect to your network drive again
- A reboot might be necessary
